DescriptionBrian Maguire is today recognised as one of the most important Irish Expressionist painters of the younger generation. His work, both in its imagery and its style is often aggressive and highly confrontational yet also contains lyrical, tender and caring elements. The themes that occupy him concern the issues surrounding the isolation of the individual in society. This is represented in his work through images of isolated beings trapped within the framework of social life. Politics, sex, the Catholic Church, life in Ireland and various forms of repression are among the topics that inform his work.
