DescriptionThis painting was bought by Hugh Lane following Walter Osborne’s premature death from pneumonia in 1903. Having worked in France and England, Osborne, in his later career, turned increasingly to portraiture and to genre scenes drawn from Dublin life. The pensive and weary mother holding her sleeping child of this painting, shown here in an interior setting, also appears in Osborne’s painting In a Dublin Park, Light and Shade (Collection: National Gallery of Ireland.) Having made preliminary drawings and studies, it was not usual for Osborne to re-use motifs on a number of occasions. (JO'D)
