DescriptionThis is one of six unfinished paintings by Francis Bacon in the collection. These works span Bacon's career from the period of his first major breakthrough in the 1940s to the last years of his life when he had attained the status of the leading figurative artist of his time. They are unique among his paintings on public display since they are incomplete and thus reveal his unorthodox techniques in their raw state. These works follow his progress from first exploratory outlines to the application of intense colour and expressive modelling. Each work can be related to other paintings from the painter's oeuvre and several mark important stages in his development.
