DescriptionThis is an intaglio print (engraving) with hand painted additions. Howth castle is depicted in the middle distance, nestling in lush green vegetation. In the foreground are four men, one on the far left is standing beside a sheep and carrying a rifle while the other three are resting on the top of a craggy rock. All the men are dressed in black with white shirts and black hats. In the background is a bay, with two islands clearly visible. There are two piers jutting out into the bay forming a sheltered harbour. There is a lighthouse building at the end of the right pier. Dotted across the bay are sailing ships. In the far distance can be seen the opposite side of the bay and a hazy horizon.

William Henry Bartlett was trained as an architect, but became a prolific print illustrator, who contributed to a remarkable number of engravings during his brief career. Exceptionally, W.H.Bartlett travelled to all the places he drew, unlike many of his contemporaries who worked up their pictures from sketches by others.
